Mood & Anxiety Disorders
Mood and anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health conditions, yet they remain widely misunderstood. Whether you are struggling with persistent low mood, overwhelming worry, or emotional highs and lows that feel beyond your control, you deserve expert care that sees the whole picture.
Understanding Mood & Anxiety
Mood and anxiety disorders encompass a broad range of conditions that affect how we feel, think, and engage with the world around us. They are not a sign of weakness or a character flaw -- they are medical conditions rooted in the complex interplay of biological, psychological, and environmental factors.
These conditions can affect anyone, regardless of age, background, or circumstances. The good news is that with the right support, most people experience significant improvement and can lead fulfilling lives.
Mood Disorders
Mood disorders involve persistent changes in emotional state that go beyond the normal ups and downs of daily life. They can profoundly affect energy, motivation, sleep, appetite, and the ability to experience pleasure.
- Depression: More than just feeling sad, depression is a pervasive condition that can drain your energy, disrupt your sleep, and make everyday tasks feel insurmountable. It may involve feelings of worthlessness, difficulty concentrating, and a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed.
- Bipolar Disorder: Characterised by episodes of mania or hypomania (elevated mood, increased energy, reduced need for sleep) alternating with periods of depression. The pattern and severity vary greatly between individuals.
- Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia): A chronic form of depression where symptoms are less severe but last for years, often becoming so familiar that people may not realise they are experiencing a treatable condition.
Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety is a natural human response to perceived threat, but when it becomes persistent, disproportionate, or begins to interfere with daily life, it may indicate an anxiety disorder. These conditions take many forms:
- Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Excessive, uncontrollable worry about a wide range of everyday matters -- health, work, relationships, finances -- often accompanied by physical symptoms such as muscle tension, restlessness, and fatigue.
- Panic Disorder: Recurrent, unexpected panic attacks -- sudden surges of intense fear accompanied by physical symptoms such as heart palpitations, shortness of breath, and dizziness. Fear of future attacks can itself become debilitating.
- Social Anxiety Disorder: Intense fear of social situations where you might be judged, embarrassed, or scrutinised. This goes far beyond shyness and can significantly limit personal and professional life.
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Characterised by intrusive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours or mental acts (compulsions) performed to reduce the distress caused by those thoughts. OCD can be profoundly time-consuming and distressing, affecting work, relationships, and daily functioning.
- Phobias: Intense, irrational fear of specific objects, situations, or activities that leads to avoidance behaviour and can restrict daily life.

- Significant changes in sleep, appetite, or energy levels.
- Withdrawal from activities, relationships, or responsibilities you previously valued.
