Overexcitabilities
Kazimierz Dabrowski identified five forms of 'overexcitability' -- heightened intensities that are central to the gifted experience and to personal growth.
What Are Overexcitabilities?
Overexcitabilities (OEs) are innate intensities described by Polish psychiatrist and psychologist Kazimierz Dabrowski as part of his Theory of Positive Disintegration. They represent a heightened physiological and psychological response to stimuli that goes beyond what is typical.
For gifted individuals, these overexcitabilities are not disorders to be treated but fundamental aspects of their being. Understanding them can transform self-perception from 'too much' to 'deeply experiencing.'
The Five Overexcitabilities
Psychomotor
A surplus of physical energy, rapid speech, restlessness, and a need for movement. Often mistaken for hyperactivity or ADHD, psychomotor OE reflects an intense drive to act and engage with the physical world.
Sensual
Heightened experience of sensory pleasure -- or discomfort. Individuals with sensual OE may be deeply moved by music, art, or textures, and equally overwhelmed by harsh lights, loud sounds, or certain fabrics.
Intellectual
An insatiable thirst for knowledge, love of problem-solving, and deep theoretical thinking. Intellectual OE drives the gifted mind to question, analyse, and seek understanding far beyond surface-level information.
Imaginational
A rich inner world of fantasy, vivid imagery, and creative invention. Individuals with imaginational OE may daydream extensively, create elaborate mental worlds, and think in metaphors and symbols.
Emotional
Intense and complex emotional experiences including deep empathy, strong attachments, and heightened awareness of one's own and others' feelings. Emotional OE is often the most visible and the most misunderstood of the five.
Clinical Significance
Overexcitabilities are frequently misinterpreted in clinical settings. Psychomotor OE may be labelled as ADHD, emotional OE as mood instability, and sensual OE as sensory processing disorder. While these conditions can and do co-occur with giftedness, understanding OEs as a separate phenomenon is essential for accurate diagnosis.
In Dabrowski's framework, overexcitabilities are not simply symptoms -- they are the raw material for personal growth and what he called 'positive disintegration,' a developmental process through which individuals move towards higher levels of personality integration and authentic living.
How Support Helps
Working with a psychiatrist who understands overexcitabilities means your intensity is seen as a strength, not a pathology. Together, we explore how your OEs manifest in daily life, relationships, and mental health.
The goal is not to diminish your intensity but to help you navigate it with greater awareness and resilience, turning what may feel overwhelming into a source of depth and meaning.
