What is Giftedness?
Giftedness is more than high IQ scores. It is a fundamentally different way of experiencing the world -- intellectually, emotionally, and sensorially.
Understanding Intellectual Giftedness
Intellectual giftedness refers to a significantly advanced capacity for reasoning, learning, and problem-solving that goes beyond conventional measures. While often associated with academic achievement, true giftedness encompasses emotional depth, creative thinking, and a heightened sensitivity to the world.
Giftedness is not a single trait but a constellation of characteristics that can manifest across multiple domains -- intellectual, creative, emotional, sensory, and psychomotor. Many gifted individuals display intensity in several of these areas simultaneously.
Common Characteristics
- Rapid learning and exceptional memory
- Intense curiosity and a drive to understand deeply
- Heightened emotional sensitivity and empathy
- A strong sense of justice and moral reasoning
- Preference for complexity and a discomfort with superficiality
- Creative and divergent thinking
- Existential questioning from an early age
- Feeling fundamentally different from peers
Challenges Faced by Gifted Individuals
Despite their strengths, gifted individuals often struggle with feelings of isolation, perfectionism, and anxiety. The gap between their inner experience and the expectations of the world around them can create significant psychological distress.
Many gifted adults were never identified in childhood, leading to years of feeling out of place, being misdiagnosed with conditions like ADHD or depression, or developing coping mechanisms that mask their true needs.
The overlap between giftedness and neurodivergence -- particularly ASD and ADHD -- adds another layer of complexity. These individuals may present with a unique combination of strengths and vulnerabilities that requires specialised understanding.
Assessment and Support
A thorough psychiatric assessment that considers giftedness alongside other neurodevelopmental factors can be life-changing. Understanding your cognitive and emotional profile is the first step towards self-acceptance and targeted support.
I work with individuals to explore their giftedness in the context of their mental health, relationships, and life goals. Together, we develop strategies that honour their intensity while building resilience.
